Herbert Egerton Hulme
5 Aug 1874 - 20 May 1958
Herbert Egerton Hulme was born in Lancashire and migrated to Australia in 1907.
He entered the Presbyterian ministry in Queensland, in 1914, and, three years later, moved to NSW becoming Minister of Ballina, 1917-1925 where he was Moderator of the Presbytery of the Richmond for a term in 1921.
Early in 1925, he moved to Sydney and became minister of the Presbyterian Church in Ultimo-Pyrmont. The parish included Sydney Boys High School and his son, Robert Hulme, enrolled in second year on 2 March 1925.
A few months later, the Sydney Boys High School Parents and Citizens Association was formed and Hulme was elected its first president, a position he held until 1928, when the school moved from Ultimo to Moore Park. His term was said to be marked by “his steady and persistent advocacy of our claims for a new school for the boys of Sydney High School”.
Hulme’s ministry called him to the Graeme Memorial Church in Waverley, in 1927. He was also Presbyterian Chaplain at the Sydney Hospital and was elected Moderator of the Sydney Presbytery for a term in 1937. He retired from Waverley in 1949.
