Sydney Edward Gregory
Sydney Edward Gregory was born in Sydney, the son of Edward James Gregory, a NSW and Australian cricketer.
Gregory was part of an early cricket dynasty, so his father and uncle would have been known to Sydney High's Headmaster, Joseph Coates, who was also an inter-colonial cricketer of some note. He enrolled at Sydney High School in 1887 for a "finishing" year and participated in ex-student events at the annual athletics meetings in 1888 and 1889.
In a cricketing career spanning 1889 - 1912, Gregory played in 58 tests (a world record at the time of his retirement). He captained the Australian team in 1912.
In 1894, he scored 201 against England, a record for the Sydney Cricket Ground, until Bradman in 1946.
His obituary in Wisden said:
Pronounced and numerous as were his triumphs in batting, Sydney Gregory will probably be remembered more for what he accomplished as a fieldsman for, while several men have equalled and some have beaten his achievements as a run-getter, the cricket field has seen no more brilliant cover-point.
