The Sydney Morning Herald, 26 August 1886 p 9:
SYDNEY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
The first annual gathering took place yesterday, at the Association Cricket Ground, and was a most pronounced success, the attendance numbering nearly 7000 persons, of whom the greater majority were of the gentler sex. The officials are to be commended for the punctuality with which they started the various events.

A. B. Piddington. T. B. Trebeck and W. C. Taylor were the judges, Messrs. J. G. Legge and C. Blumer timekeeper, Messrs. Trebeck and E. Stout referees for walking, Mr. J. F. Elphinston starter, and Mr. Coates referee. The Three-Mile Bicycle Handicap was under the direction of the New South Wales Cyclists' Union, and may be said to have been the event of the day. It was a hard ridden race, and the winner, Mr. E. M’Donald, wheeled in after no small amount of endurance and pluck, for he was closely followed by Mr. H. Salway second and Mr. A. Kinnamont third, both of whom battled bravely to gain a victory. It was a capital race from the start. The results were:—
