Annual sports meeting, 12 May 1897

The 12th annual sports meeting of the Sydney High School Amateur Athletic Club was held yesterday at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Favorable weather prevailed and attendance, which numbered about 1200, included Mr. Jacob Garrard, M.P. (Minister for Public Instruction), and Messrs. J. Waterhouse, M.A., and W. Compton, the headmasters.

Referee, Mr. J. Waterhouse; judges, Messrs. T. B. Trebeck, W. Crompton, W. Holmes, and W. Williams; judges for walking, R. Coombes, L. Stephenson, and L. Stephenson, jun.; starter, Mr. R. Coombes, clerks of the course, Messrs. H. C. Rourke and S. Spain; hon. secretary, Mr. F. Todd. The officials for the open events were: Starter, Mr. R. Coombes; clerk of the course, Mr. S. Spain; judges, Messrs E. S. Marks and F. A. Corti; referee, Mr. W. G. Alexander; timekeeper, Mr. T. Watson.

The 100yds. Championship, and the contest for champion of the school, were both secured by C. Alford. The 200yds. Race for the school cup was won, on a close finish, by G. A. Smith. A good race was the 880yds. Handicap, won by H. Farrington, with H. Barker, scratch, a good second. J. Dunlop won the One Mile Walk, and the Mile Bicycle Race, for students and ex-students, was won by V. Nathan, of 45yds. P. Wicks won the 220yds. ex-Students' Race. The 100yds. Open Handicap proved a good event, and was, after being run in heats, won by G. M. Rowold, of the Darlinghurst Harriers. The following were the results:—
100yds. Championship (under 16).—C. Alford, 1; H. Hinds, 2. Won by about 2yds.
Champion of School, 100yds.—C. Alford, 1; S. A. Smith, 2.
120yds. Handicap (under 15).—A. Messmer 1yd., 1; R. Davenport and J. Shipton 2, dead heat, 2. The finish was very close.
150yds. Siamese Handicap.—R. Davenport and H. Hinds 15yds., 1; S. A. Smith and F. Jones 2, 2.
220yds. Handicap (boys under 16).—H. Hinds 3yds., 1; L. Sims scratch, 2; A. Messmer 6, 3. This was a plucky race, and was won by about 2yds. Time, 27 3-5sec.
220yds. School Cup.—S. A. Smith 4yds., 1; G. Madsen 13, 2; C. Alford scratch, 3. This was a rather close race. Time, 25 2-5sec.
100yds. Sack Race.— J. Shipton, 1 : TL Blumer, 2.
880yds. Handicap.— H. Farrington 110yds., 1; H. Barker scratch, 2; G. Madsen 35, 3. The other starters were:—
O. Wood, J. Dunlop, and J. Shipton. The race was a good one all the way. Time, 2min. 16sec.
Throwing the Cricket Ball.— C. W. P. Clifford scratch, 91yds., 1.
300yds. Club Handicap.— S. A. Smith 5yds., 1; J. Shipton 25, 2. The other starters were: P. Clifford, O. Wood, J. Dunlop, and H. Farrington. Time, 38sec.
One Mile Walk.— J. Dunlop 100yds, 1: P. Weston 25, 2. P. Clifford also started from scratch, but gave up after one lap. Dunlop led all the way, Weston closing on him only once before the finish, when Dunlop spurted, and won by a couple of feet. Time, 9min. 39 1-5sec.
150yds. Handicap.—H. Hinds 10yds., 1; G. Madsen 10, 2; C. Alford scratch, 3. The finish was a very close one. Time. 17 2-5sec.
440yds. Obstacle Race.—L. Sims 10yds., 1; J. Shipton 20, 2; H. Blumer 20, 3.
One Mile Bicycle Handicap (for students and ex-students).—V. Nathan 45yds., 1; H Blumer 25, 2; G. F. Diamond 25, 3. The other starters were: R. Forsyth 25, S. Spain 25, J. Lusby scratch, A. Reuss 35, J. Craig 25, J. Dunlop 80, A. Close 200, and R. Kidd 25. The riders were handicapped on the ground by Mr. T. Watson. Eleven started, and the race was hard ridden all the way. No time was taken. On the third lap A. Reuss fell, and subsequently complained that another rider had endeavoured to pass him before being a machine’s length in front.
440 yds. Club Handicap.—G. Madsen 25yds., 1; H. Barker scratch, 2; H. Farrington 55, 3. Time, 59 1/2sec.
220yds. ex-Students' Handicap.—P. Wicks 6yds., 1; P. J. Pratt 8, 2; B. James 20, 3. Time, 23 3-5sec.
100yds. Open Handicap.—First heat: J. Tooher (Darlinghurst Harriers) 8 1/2yds., 1; B. H. Richards (Darlinghurst Harriers) scratch, 2. Time, 10 2-5sec. Second heat: O. A. Smith (Darlinghurst Harriers) 1 1/2yds., 1; G. M. Rowohl (Darlinghurst Harriers) 10, 2. Time, 10 3-5sec. Third heat: R. Pyers, jun. (Balmain Harriers) 8yds., 1; F. Haigh (Sydney Harriers) 6, 2. Final: G. M. Rowohl, 1; J. Tooher, 2; O. A. Smith, 3. Won by a bare yard. Time. 10 3-10sec.
