Annual sports meeting, 10 November 1899
Evening News, 11 November 1899, p 2:
Yesterday the fourteenth annual sports gathering of the Sydney High School Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A large number of ladies took advantage of the fine weather to witness the competition of the boys. The officials of the day (including most of the masters of the schools) were: Messrs. J. Waterhouse (head master), W. Crompton, L. Stephenson, T. B. Trebeck, G. C. Saxby, P. R. Smith, together with a committee of boys (C. Willis, H. Salier, H. Miller, J. S. Punch, and H. Flashman).
The Daily Telegraph, 13 Nov 1899, p 8:
There were large "fields" for all the events, particularly the obstacle race, the 440yds. club handicap, and the long jump. The winner of the school championship, Laing, ran in capital form, sustaining the same pace from start to finish. Eight started for the half-mile walk. Herwig (35yds.) went away at a good pace, and kept in front, for about 150yds., when Atwill caught him. In the meantime, Flashman (10yds.) had overhauled Collins and Daly, and all three soon reached Herwig, who had shot his bolt. Five hundred yards from home Flashman forged ahead, and ultimately won with 15yds. to spare. Though 30 had sent in their name for the students' and ex-students' cycling event, only six appeared on the track. M'Donald (scratch) rushed to the front at a great rate, and led at the end of the first lap, but the pace soon told its tale upon all, with the result that they slowed down a great deal in the next quarter. At the bell Hancock, who had been lagging behind, came with a full head of steam on, and pushed the post 20yds. to the good.
Mr. J. Waterhouse was judge and Mr. G. Saxby, starter. Messrs. H. Flashman and H. Salier were hon. secretary and treasurer respectively of the meeting. Results:—
