Annual sports meeting, 2 September 1908
Referee, 9 September 1908, p 10:
The string of school sports which annually take place in the early Spring opened with the games of the Sydney High School on the S.C.G. last Wednesday afternoon, a fairly strong nor'-westerly wind was blowing, but the weather was fine and the attendance satisfactory. The 100yds Championship of the School fell to Bates, with Taylor second, and Todd third. In a close finish Bates won by inches in 11 1/2sec.
I am unable to give more than the bare surname because the programme did not give further information, and, owing to great pressure of work I was unable to be present. The event of the day was the 300yds All Schools' Scratch Race, and this fell to P. Lavender, of the Sydney Grammar School. Lavender got home in the good time for a schoolboy of 34 1-5sec.
Hon. secretary A. C. R. Todd and the school's committee of management handled the meeting, I hear, in first-class style.
The Arrow, 12 September 1908, p 12:
The photo, in to-day's issue is that of H. B. Taylor, who is this year's champion of the Sydney High School. His performances for a schoolboy are first-class, and later on should make a name in open events if he joins one of the N.S.W.A.A.A. clubs. These are his performances at the High School's recent annual sports: Broad Jump, 17ft 10 1/2 in; High Jump, 5ft; 220ydsr 25 2-5sec (all of which he won), and also finished third in the 440yds, run in 56 2-5sec, thus winning the School Cup with a score of 10 points.
